Whanganui river settlement update
Following discussions with Ngā Tāngata Tiaki o Whanganui and the Office of Treaty Settlements, Uenuku Charitable Trust is considering a number of suggested alterations to the Te Awa Tupua (Whanganui River Claims Settlement) Bill.
Discussions between Uenuku Charitable Trust (UCT), Ngā Tāngata Tiaki and the Office of Treaty Settlements are ongoing, UCT chairman Aiden Gilbert said.
“There are still a number of outstanding issues that are quite challenging to work through, but we will continue to negotiate our interests so that the river settlement reflects the interests of all people of the river,” Mr Gilbert said.
In a submission to the Māori Affairs Select Committee in August, UCT said it generally supports a river settlement but a number of issues needed to be addressed.
“We are committed to finding solutions and resolving issues of identity, representation and kaitiakitanga on the river,” Mr Gilbert said.
