Te Korowai o Wainuiārua extends its support to the Ruapehu District Council following their unanimous vote to retain the Māori Ward and its three Māori Ward seats for the upcoming October 2025 local body elections. This pivotal decision reaffirms the Council’s commitment to fostering iwi/hapu relationships and continuing the progress made since the Māori Ward was first established in 2020.

The Council’s decision reflects a thoughtful approach to community engagement. Despite the requirement for a binding poll next year, which will impact the Māori Ward only for the 2028 and 2031 elections, the Council has shown its commitment to listening to public opinion. The recent meeting, held in the Taumarunui Council Chamber, saw an impressive turnout of over 130 attendees. This strong public participation underscored the community’s overwhelming support for the Māori Ward, with all but one speaker advocating for its retention.

Mayor Weston Kirton acknowledged the significant contribution of those who voiced their support and expressed his appreciation for their perspectives. He also highlighted the positive relationship between the Council and iwi, recognising the crucial role of iwi leadership in guiding the Council’s efforts.

“As a Council, we have moved a long way in the last few years in our engagement with our iwi and we want to see this momentum maintained,” he said.
“It is important we continue our journey here in Ruapehu. It is a work in progress, and we still have a lot to learn. Council remains committed to fostering unity and continuing its collaboration with iwi and the wider community to ensure fair representation and equity in local governance.”

The Council’s decision to direct the Chief Executive to provide further information on the potential implications of not proceeding with the binding poll demonstrates a commitment to transparency and informed decision-making. This approach ensures that all stakeholders are well-informed as they navigate this crucial issue.

Te Korowai o Wainuiārua is encouraged by the Council’s dedication to fostering unity and engagement. The ongoing collaboration between Te Korowai o Wainuiārua and the Ruapehu District Council is greatly valued, and there is optimism about continuing this productive partnership.

This recent decision marks a significant step forward in ensuring that the Māori Ward remains a vital component of local governance. Te Korowai o Wainuiārua looks forward to working closely with the Ruapehu District Council to build on the progress made and to support the ongoing efforts to enhance equitable representation within the community.
