Kia ora koutou,
We want to inform you that the overall alert level remains at Volcanic Alert Level 1.
However, the Department of Conservation (DOC) has decided to move to Risk Management Stage B due to unusually low temperatures in the Te Wai ā-moe area. This situation could potentially lead to a small eruption as normal heating cycles resume, though GNS Science currently assesses the likelihood of an eruption as low.
As a result, DOC has issued a ‘recommended do not enter’ advisory for a 1.5km radius around Te Wai ā-moe, where the risk is higher. Concession activities within this zone have been temporarily suspended. This change does not affect ski area operations, which are outside the restricted radius, but it does impact some alpine guiding tourism businesses.
