National Park, and en route to Raetihi – obelisk commemorating the last spike of the Main Trunk Line … which carried away our Waimarino forest. Construction of Main Trunk Railway 1885-1908. The Crown engineered the ‘purchase’ of 417,500 acres of the Waimarino block in 1887 from our hapū and iwi. Our forests in the Waimarino, with 5000-year-old trees and incomparable bird-life, were decimated by 1930s. More than 150 sawmills processed the trees, the railway carried the timber out, the timber was used to build the colony. Between 1908 and 1947, 700 million feet of building timber came from the Waimarino.
