Para Kore – Zero Waste in Aotearoa
Riro taonga mai – Riro taonga atu

Tēnā koutou, tēnā tātou!

Ngā mihi o te Tau Hou ki a koutou katoa! Well, it’s been a busy few weeks for us and we just wanted to share some of our achievements with you, and also some upcoming events.

We were a finalist in the Green Ribbon Awards earlier this month, nominated for a a Kaitiaki Leadership Award. At an award ceremony at parliament, Te Rūnanga-ā-Iwi o Ngāti Kahu won the award for their inspiring kaitaki mahi at Lake Waiporohita in the Far North. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou!

Then last week, the Associate Minister for the Environment Scott Simpson announced a funding boost for Para Kore to continue our mahi in more regions. This funding has enabled us to expand the programme to Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, the East Coast and Rotorua where our new kaiārahi have already started their mahi.

Our kaimahi are doing great work in the regions. You can find all their contact details on our website: http://parakore.maori.nz/contact-us/ Please do not hesitate to contact them. They are there to support you, your marae, your organisation in your Para Kore journey.

A Para Kore highlight each year is of course our Hui ā-Tau! Don’t think AGM – although we will do that too – but think workshops, speakers, field trips, learning, whanaungatanga! Last year, we went to Taranaki and spent an awesome weekend at Parihaka. This year, we will go to Maketu Marae in Kawhia. The dates are set: 27 – 29 October 2017. Registrations will open shortly. But for now, please mark these dates in your diary, e hoa mā.

Kirihou kore! Kawea ake! Several groups from across Aotearoa are working together for Plastic Free July 2017. Be part of the solution whānau!

During Plastic Free July, we refuse single-use plastic. “Single-use” includes plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging…basically anything that’s intended only to be used once and then discarded. If refusing ALL single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the TOP 4 challenge (plastic bags, plastic water bottles, disposable coffee cups & straws).

You can sign up through our Facebook Event. There are lots of useful resources on the Para Kore website and also, check out the Plastic Free July website. This is about looking after Papatūānuku and Ranginui – caring for our environment.
